Advantages of a Teak House
- Situated between 13-16° N and 95-106° E, central Thailand
has a hot and humid tropical climate with temperatures as high as 39.9°
in the hot season. A raised house provides better ventilation than one
situated on the ground. The high-pitched roof keeps the house cool as
the heat is trapped in the top of the ceiling amd the eaves protect
it from the sun. Buildings are responsible for about half the world's emissions; domestic housing is the most important single source of greenhouse gases so we should all aim to create energy efficient houses.
- All regions of Thailand are subject to inundation by rain during
the rainy season. The overhanging eaves protect the house from the rain
and the fact that the house is raised protects it from flooding. Rainwater
runs off the steep roof quickly and falls through the permeable terrace
and house floors.
- In the past Thailand's forests were full of dangerous animals; even
today there are snakes and insects such as the the large centipede known
by Thais as the Da Kaap, which can kill an infant and cause great pain
in an adult. The raised floor prevents these creatures from coming into
the house.
- A traditional Thai house move can be deconstructed and moved to a
new location.
-
A traditional Thai house can be considered as a good long term investment.
